Brandy Kelley, Child Nutrition Coordinator
I was born in New Mexico but lived in Alaska, South Dakota, and Louisiana. My dad was in the Air Force and we moved every 4 years. I came to California when I was 16 and I have been here ever since.
I worked at Hot Dog on a Stick as my first job. I then went to school to become a Dental Assistant. I worked in Dental offices for about 4 years. Deciding to take a break from that, I did a year of construction. I took a 5 year break to be with my children. I currently live in El Cajon with my Fiancé, my four children who are 21, 15, 14, and 10. We have 4 dogs and 2 cats. I love frogs and getting to see my students every day.
I have always wanted to be a teacher, but life took me on a different path. When I was ready to return to work I thought to start part time at my kids’ school.
My career at Dehesa started 10 years ago when I was an Extended Student Services Aide. One day, a student was having a rough day and no one could calm him down, so I tried and it worked. The student would look for me after that for help, I knew then I wanted to get back to work in a school full time. I moved into a Special Education Aide, and then into the front office as Administrative Clerk and Health Aid. I register students and take care of any health needs. I recently became the Child Nutrition Coordinator where I plan the menu and order the food for lunches.
What I love about my job is the students and family. I love getting to see their smiles and joy. I enjoy seeing past students return all grown up, driving, going onto their own careers. I feel like we are a family here and that our students visit years later to see us.
Dehesa is a great school. We are small but can make a big impact. All four of my children have attended Dehesa starting as EAK and finishing in 8th grade. The teachers have always been good, kind, and patient people. At Dehesa, we get to know everyone and their families. Everyone looks out for each other. I have had the pleasure of experiencing Dehesa as a parent and staff, and I can honestly say I have made some wonderful relationships with other parents and other staff members that will be with me a lifetime.
