K-5

English Language Arts

Our TK-5th grade students receive individualized instruction in reading, writing and grammar. The teachers collaborate weekly to support and guide instruction based on their students’ needs. In addition to our adopted reading and grammar curriculum, our students also practice reading and writing skills on Learning Upgrade, an online student support program. Students are exposed to different genres of reading and writing; however, much of our focus in on expository text.  Dehesa teachers also have access to a leveled reading library that is utilized to meet the reading needs of their students.  Every K-5th grade class has technology support including iPads and computers.

Math

Dehesa TK-5th grade students receive math instruction through a variety of strategies and practices. Students experience direct instruction, small group collaborative group work, projects, and individual support based on their needs. Dehesa is fortunate to have new math curriculum, Learning Upgrade, and manipulatives to support learning. Our K-5th grade teachers have gone through math training to help support the transition into common core standards.

With Ms. Pallitto, students may read stories or articles from a text book, however, we also have regular studies in Scope Magazine and Junior Scholastic, as well as novel studies, group reads, and independent reading. We also use the Internet to find articles, as well as information related to class reading.  Students write extensively about their reading, their experiences, and studies in other classes.  Students also have a rigorous study of vocabulary.

Math

Mrs. Griggs uses technology to offer a "flipped" classroom where students watch her instructional videos as homework, then do the practice activities in class, with her assistance.  Following Common Core, Mrs. Griggs uses a variety of text and online resources.

Science

Mr. Schneider follows all State standards and uses lab work, as well as real life situations and field studies to allow students an engaging learning environment.  A variety of texts, as well as publications and the Internet are used in the classroom.

Social Studies

Student’s social studies instruction is from their grade level teacher.  Teachers follow standards, using texts, Internet, and other publications.  In this class, students also learn geography for their current study location, and the world around it.  Students may create computer-based projects such as slide shows, posters both paper and online, exhibits, artwork, skits, or other products to show learning.
