Building Character

NEU Dehesa Logo "Character Education"

Here at Dehesa Elementary we use the “Character Counts” character education program which focusses on 6 main character traits:  Trustworthiness, Respect, Fairness, Responsibility, Caring, and Citizenship.  These character traits are woven into our school climate through our code of conduct, expected student behaviors, character awards, and murals throughout our campus.  We also use and teach students Sean Covey’s “The 7 Habits of Happy Kids” as a guide for lifelong good habits. The 7 habits include: Be Proactive, Begin with the End in Mind, Put First Things First, Think Win-Win, Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood, Synergize, and Sharpen the Saw.  Each year we do a Kindness Challenge for one week where we encourage students to do a variety of kind acts at school, home, and in their communities.  Our 4th and 5th grade students get the opportunity to participate in our Peace Patrol program.  They patrol our primary recess helping students to resolve conflicts peacefully by talking out their problems and helping them come to a mutual solution.  We believe character counts and can change the world. Dehesa School also supports and encourages excellent character through spirit assemblies, character awards, Golden Tickets, academic awards, citizenship awards, attendance awards, and college spirit
